Loosen the band size on the bra. If the band size of the bra is too tight, it can cause the underwire in a bra to dig uncomfortably into your skin. Most bras have three length options on the clasp; these clasps adjust to provide more comfort in an underwire bra. Alternatively, bra band lengtheners will extend the band of an ill-fitting bra to make the underwire more comfortable. According to Jene' Luciani and Ann Deal, authors of "The Bra Book," if a band lengthener remedies the problem, the bra was of an incorrect size.
Lengthen the Straps
Lengthen the lingeries straps. If your bra straps are too short, they can pull the underwire of a bra into your rib cage and cause discomfort. Bra straps have a plastic or metal clip that allows lengthening. Use this clip to lengthen the straps so you can comfortably fit two fingers between the strap and your shoulder. To make sure that the straps are an even length, take the bra off and lay it out flat to compare. If this fixes the problem, the bra is the correct size, states Carroll.
Dry the bra in a clothes dryer.
Observe the dried bra for wrinkles. It is possible that the wrinkles are gone at this step. If you still observe wrinkles, move on to the next step.
Apply a hair straightener to the wrinkled areas. Using a heated hair straightener, clasp the wrinkled area in the bra for around one second. From that area, move the hair straightener slowly outward, toward one edge of the bra. Repeat this process until all wrinkles have disappeared.
Use a fabric pen to trace the bottom of the wire onto the bra cups. Make sure you have approximately 3/8 of an inch of fabric remaining at the bottom of the bra, which you need for sewing over the wire.
Lay the channeling on top of the inside stitching of the bra cup. Line up the two evenly. Allow 1/2 inch of the channeling to hang off at each end.
Sew the channeling to the bra's seam on both sides of the channeling. The wire will have to fit inside of the channeling so make sure you do not sew the channeling shut.
Cut the end pieces of the channeling off and sew the ends. Be careful when sewing over wire so that the needle of the sewing machine does not come down onto the wire and crack.
